A Different Wehixamukès Story . . . Told by Nora Thompson Dean to Bruce Pearson and Jim Rementer in 1968.
English:
Long ago there was a person who was named Wehixamukes.
Lenape:
Lòmwe hunt ahpu awènika luwènsu Wehixamukès.
English:
He seemed like he did not have good sense,
Lenape:
Alàshi màta wëleòtamuu,
English:
but Wehixamukes was powerful and wise.
Lenape:
shuk chipilësuwa òk lëpwe nàka Wehixamukèsa.
English:
One time he went along when several men when out hunting.
Lenape:
Kwëtën wite ènta kèxa lënuwàk alaihtit.
English:
They told him what he must do was cook.
Lenape:
Na tëlawo kahta ta wixëni.
English:
The leader told him,
Lenape:
Na nikanixink lënu tëlao,
English:
"I am hungry. I wish I could eat some turkey that has been dipped in grease."
Lenape:
"Nkatupwi. Kwëlaha nkàski muhòòn chikënëm pëpòhkënasit."
English:
Wehixamukes heard everything that he said.
Lenape:
Pwëntao nàka Wehixamukèsa wèmi kèku èluwèt.
English:
When evening came all the men went to cut wood.
Lenape:
Enta lòkwik mënàxeyok wèmi nèki lënuwàk.
English:
When they returned they saw Wehixamukes
Lenape:
Enta làpi ktëkihtit neyòwò nàka Wehixamukèsa
English:
repeatedly dipping a turkey in a kettle [of grease],
Lenape:
pe pëpòhkënat chikënëm husink,
English:
and the turkey still had feathers and still had its innards.

English:
They told him, "What on earth are you doing?"
Lenape:
Tëlawò, "Kèku nink lah kmikëntàm?"
English:
Wehixamukes said, "I heard you people yesterday
Lenape:
Luwe naka Wehixamukèsa, "Kpëntulhumo lòkëwe
English:
when you said, "I wish I could eat a turkey that had been dipped in grease."
Lenape:
ènta luweèkw, "Kwëlaha pëpòhkënasit chikënëm nkàski muhò."
English:
Again they told him, "It's not that way!
Lenape:
Làpi tëlawò, "Tètxan tà nën!
English:
First you pluck the turkey and then take out all those innards."
Lenape:

English:
Wehixamukes said, "I would have done so if you had told me."
Lenape:
